How to Install Suspension Pipe Clamps

Difficulty beginner beginner Difficulty Level
Time < 2 hours Under 2 Hours

Whether you’re building a new construction or doing some maintenance, properly supporting your system’s plumbing pipeline is essential to every plumbing system. Pipe supports prevent pipes from crashing down, reduce pipe noises and aid pipe expansion and contraction. When choosing the right pipe support, it's important to consider the type and location of your pipes. Once you know what your system needs, you can begin installing the pipe support.

This guide will focus on the installation of suspension pipe clamps, a quick and easy way to support your water pipes to avoid damage to the overall system. Oatey offers a full range of pipe support products so be sure to follow the instructions provided for the specific product that you are using

Identify where the pipe needs to be supported (optional) Wrap the suspension clamp around the pipe. Fasten the clamp Review the Installation

What You'll Need For This Project

  • 1 pack of ½ in. Oatey®Suspension Pipe Clamps
  • 4 screws or nails
  • Power drill or hammer

*Your material needs may vary depending upon the type of pipe and the length of pipe you need to support.

1. Identify where the pipe needs to be supported (optional)

You can begin by using a pencil to mark the areas where you plan to install the pipe clamps
(refer to your local code to determine spacing)

Oatey tip: Pipe supports are only as strong as whatever it is anchored to — wood or concrete. If not anchored correctly and securely to the wall or ceiling, how much weight the hanger can hold will not matter.

2. Wrap the suspension clamp around the pipe.

Oatey Suspension Pipe Clamps are made of a durable plastic that allows the clamp to stretch completely around the pipe. Before using a nail (or screw) to fasten the clamp to the stud wall, pinch the clamp tightly around the pipe to ensure a tight fit.

3. Fasten the clamp

Fasten the suspension clamp to the surface of the stud using a screw or nail.

4. Review the Installation

Review your work to ensure that you have installed the pipe support everywhere that is needed.
